Blogging -- In the Beginning

If I were to write a book about Blogs, I could begin something like this:

In the beginning Man created the Computer and the Web.

And the Web was without form, and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

And the Spirit of Man moved upon the interface.

And the Man said, "Let there be communication"; and there was communication.

And Man saw the communication, that it was good; and Man divided the communication from data transmission.

And Man called the communication Blog.

However, now and here I do not intend to write fiction (I do this on my www.medievalhearts.com site).
On the contrary -- I'll try to be realistic, rational, and informative. Here we go:

-- Opening Brand New vistas in Communication

Not so long ago, Blogging was the latest buzzword in the Internet. Blogging descends from the combination of the words 'web' and 'log'.

Blog is actually like a message board, wherein you can post thoughts and opinions to be read by others. A large number of audiences view a blog. Sometimes, you need to register to a blog through your user id and password. In most cases, you don't need a password to read a blog. However, you definitely need to register to post messages on a blog.

Blog works two-ways. It may either offer the reader comprehensive and consummate information about specific topics through articles or comments, or may offer a potent place for writers to express their feelings and desires.

In a very broad way, a blog may encompass day-to-day comments of authors, movie stars, characters on soap operas, hard-hitting news articles columns, and of course, you and me writing about whatever takes our fancy -- everything under the sun. However, the sole purpose of writing a blog is to bring readers on a common platform, hence encouraging a higher level of communication among them. Blogging has picked up fast as a utilitarian term in the world of Internet.

In an even broader way, Blog, as its etymological origins suggest, is any kind of web logging for giving information, advice, etc. In a big company, this would include Instant Messaging, Peer-to-Peer, email, besides other Web-based communications.

When I blog I go to my Blogger page and make a post, or when visiting someone else's blog, I leave comments. However, Blogging inside organizations requires a different treatment than in private Internet activity.

-- A Friendly Interface for Your Company's AUP (Acceptable Usage Policy)

Blogging provides a vigorous environment to an organizational system -- all action and movement. Blogging in the organizations, in those places where it is accepted, is based on AUP, which deals with every form of web communication -- Instant Messaging, Peer-to-Peer and email among others. The AUP makes clear when the users have to read the blogs, post articles and/or retrieve necessary information from them as part of their daily routine. One of the most imminent possibilities that lies before many organizations is that of people using personal, or worse, business data for wrong purposes.

-- Implications and Managing Your AUP Inside Your Business

An unmanaged blog might turn hostile and influence many sensitive positions. AUP of many corporations require employees to sign non-disclosure agreements, which if not done will leave open company’s confidential information to the global audience. This in turn will leave the organization with legal and/or financial problems.

For example, if an employee of some computer organization responds to a technical blog with an advice stating that buying a particular product-line might hamper the efficiency of your system, there is an increased possibility that the consumers slow down on hiring the services of that product-line. Henceforth the company providing the product-line runs the risk of running into huge financial loss, and if not same with your own organization, may charge your company for damages.

To fight with this aspect of blogs, many organizations list in their security aside from AUP software screens, fire walls, and rules of where and how an employee can search the web.

The brighter side of blogging is that it serves as an excellent marketing tool to direct potential audience to the site by providing them with advice -- financial or business building tips. A secure blog can also enhance customer relations, invite consumer contact and increase company’s visibility in the global panorama.

The organizations' AUP's list "DO’s and DONT’s" that serve as an ideal means to put a check on the confidential information and prevent it from slipping in the wrong hands.

Come back soon to read some more on this subject, and many others.
See you soon,
Rocsanne
